I’m a doctor, mother and wife.

Many years ago, one of my clinical professors and an extraordinary doctor said, “Being allowed into people’s lives is a privilege. Never forget that.”

My articles were forged by that privilege: listening to the stories of people and the issues that impact their lives. (Click + on upper right to read the articles)

After being shortlisted for an Arthur Ellis Award for an unhung Arthur in 2017, I slowly devoted more time writing and, by 2024 (I did say ‘slowly’) decided to devote myself full-time to writing a novel.

The magnificent Kai was my writing companion and muse. I think of her often and miss her always.

Our puppies Winnie and Audrey Hepburn rarely leave my side. They also rarely edit anything I write. Audrey Hepburn is Kai’s grandniece and reminds me, everyday, that love and life go on.

I can’t imagine writing without Bouviers. Many of us have a favourite breed and this is mine. You can follow the pup’s antics (and mine) on Bluesky @maryfernando.bsky.social
